Freshman Friday: Mendoza runs through high school

February 28, 2016

Every Friday, Highlander Publications chooses a freshman to be featured in “Freshman Friday,” giving the student population the opportunity to get to know its freshman class. Read below to learn about this week’s freshman, Sofia Mendoza.

What sports do you play?

I played soccer in Mexico when I was little, and I might do it with school this year. I also did Cross Country this fall.

What was your favorite thing about Cross Country this year?

All the freshmen got to meet lots of new people and on the first day of school, we all knew someone in each class. It was kind of like a big family.

Where in Mexico did you live and how come you moved to the United States?

We lived in Chihuahua, Mexico, which is right under Texas. We moved here because of my dad’s job.

How old were you when you moved to the United States?

When we moved, I was 12. It was in seventh grade.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I love to go to camp.

What do you like about camp?

I love how you get to meet new people who you would not get to meet if you did not go to camp. I also really like how I never know what time or day it is because I don’t have my phone there.

What camp do you go to?

I go to Timber Wolf, Deep Freeze and Fall Weekend, which are all with Young Life.

If you could be a sandwich, what type would you be?

I would definitely be an avocado BLT from Colectivo or a chicken pesto sandwich from Fiddleheads.

If you could fill an empty swimming pool with anything, what would it be?

I would fill it with all kinds of food; Chinese, Italian, Mexican and American.

What have you enjoyed most about high school so far?

I love how different high school is from middle school. I really like how there are more people and more responsibilities. I love going to football games and other events as well.

What are you looking forward to about the rest of high school?

I am really excited to get an idea of what I want to do when I grow up, because right now I have absolutely no idea.
