Homestead students Chris Aceto, junior, Andrew Wang, freshman, Maureena Ma, Mitchell Larson, Yibo Pan, William Clark, Daniel Kim, seniors and Julian Camacho, freshman, took first place in the North Shore Mathematics contest at Grafton High School on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, .

I think that the contest went very well. These sorts of contests are always fun because they require use of multiple areas of math in order to solve the problems, not just the topics in your current math class. I especially enjoyed the team round, in which we have to solve six challenging problems in twelve minutes,” Camacho said.

Sixty students from seven different schools competed in this contest. The students solved problems both individually and as a team. The contest consists of the team round and four individual rounds: geometry, algebra, problem solving and advanced math. Each individual round consists of three problems of varying difficulty, all of which must be solved in twelve minutes.

“It was a great experience for everyone and it went very well,” Wang said.

Both Camacho and Wang tied for first place with a student from another school. Camacho and Wang had perfect scores in their winning effort. Also, Pan scored tenth in the contest, and Michael Pokorny, freshman, received recognition for tenth place out of 50 participants on the junior varsity level.

“The students performed well against strong competition.  They were very happy when they heard the results.  It was a good afternoon for the team,” Mr. Joe Ordinans, math teacher and math team coach, said.
