Number 22, Joey Hobbs, junior, number 9, Nathan Schimpf, sophomore and number 14, Cole Simpson, senior, celebrate after scoring a goal against the Brookfield Stars in a game ending with a score of 5-3, Highlanders. Homestead is undefeated to start the season. “We came out on top which is always good but we need to continue to work and practice for our victories,” Hobbs said.

The winter season of Homestead sports is underway, including a big week of games for all sports. Teams are beginning their North Shore Conference play, facing off against some tough opponents.  This week proves to be an important one as boys hockey, girls basketball, boys swim and boys basketball attempt to keep their undefeated records.

The boys hockey team is undefeated in its first four games. The hockey team takes on comparable opponent in Cedarburg (1-1-1) on Friday at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The boys hockey team closes out its back-to-back with a matchup against the Germantown Ice Bears (1-4) on Saturday at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

In other news, the boys basketball team heads into this week (1-1) and faces Brookfield East (2-0) in the Homestead Field House on Tuesday. Following that game, Homestead faces a young Grafton team (3-0) again at home.  Homestead swept Grafton in last year’s meetings, but Grafton proves to be a tougher matchup as they are off to a fast start this year.

The ladies co-op hockey team, Lakeshore Lightning (3-1), faces two opponents this week, both away, against Viroqua (0-3) on Friday and Badger Thunder (1-3) on Saturday.  These games take place at the Viroqua Ice Center and the Poppy Waterman Ice Arena, respectively.  The Lakeshore Lighting team has five representatives from Homestead: Addie Anderson, senior; Alex Burns, junior; Erin Connolly, junior; Sydney Roeper, junior and Katie Gebhardt, sophomore.

Homestead’s girls basketball team is coming off a win against Port Washington and is looking to keep the ball rolling as they tip off at Tosa East on Tuesday.  Homestead has found success with its new head coach, Coach Corey Wolf, and are undefeated so far.  Taylor Mcllwraith, junior, said, “This year, we are working better as a team, which is helping us in our games. We had to change a lot of aspects of the game, and it has been a challenge but each and every player is working to make the transition easier.” Homestead then plays at Grafton on Tuesday.

The wrestling team starts its season with a home opener against Grafton Thursday.  The Highlanders have returning seniors Drew Waller, Gage Zupke, Joey Fischer, Mark Usatinsky, Antoine Bierny and Connor Scholtus.  Waller stated, “For the team to succeed this year in our dual meets we need people to sacrifice personal records to fill weight classes to prevent forfeits and earn team points, and from an individual standpoint we really just need to drill technique and work on position.”

Lastly, the boys swim team opened its season with a 134-46 win over Port Washington last Tuesday.  They face another North Shore Conference opponent as they host a meet against Grafton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The varsity team will then close out the week with its conference relays meet at Thomas Jefferson Middle School this Friday at 4 p.m.
