The Homestead boys varsity basketball team has just one game left before it begins playoff competition, but it can’t focus on the post season just yet. After all, this Friday will mark a face-off between the Highlanders and one of their fiercest competitors: Germantown.

Currently ranked first within the North Shore conference with a record of 12-0 and ranked first in the state of Wisconsin, Germantown has undeniably been the team to beat during the 2014-2015 season.

Homestead, on the other hand, is ranked second in the conference with a record of 10-2. Their only in-conference losses are to Germantown and Whitefish Bay. However, the last time Homestead played the Warhawks on Jan. 9 they lost by seven points, with a final score of 65-58.

“We’ve played Germantown already this year, so we know what we’re up against,” Cameron Marotta, senior, said.

Homestead has experienced both victories and losses in recent weeks. On Feb. 13 they won against Milwaukee Lutheran by a margin of 10 points, but lost against Brown Deer on Feb. 11 by the same amount. Germantown has continued to win throughout the month of February, beating Brookfield Central by over 20 points and Nicolet by 26.

Overall, they are 12-7 for the 14-15 season as opposed to the Warhawks undefeated record, but the Highlanders hope to add a point in their losses column when Friday rolls around.

“We’ve just been at our normal practice routine for our game,” Marotta said of the team’s preparations leading up to this Friday’s game. “Our scout team guys do a great job emulating what we are going to see, so all the credit goes to them and the coaching staff for getting us ready to face Germantown.”

Jack Popp, junior, believes the game between his team and the Warhawks will be a fun match-up for both the Highlanders and their fans, but hopes the outcome of the last meeting between the rivals will be reversed.

“It’s always a big game between the two of us and it’s a good atmosphere. It should be a good game, and hopefully we can get a win this time,” Popp said.
