The Long Red Line

The boys basketball team stands together during a game in January. While they did win that game, they are no longer focused on the regular season and are turning their focus toward the playoffs. ” We just need to come out and make sure we are focused and ready to work,” Jack Popp, junior, said.

Homestead basketball looks to outscore Whitefish Bay

February 26, 2015

After a 67-63 loss to Germantown last week and loss of the North Shore Conference title, Homestead’s boys basketball team hopes to achieve a victory in their first playoff game of the season against a different conference team: Whitefish Bay.

“It was a tough loss for us against Germantown, but not one that we’re dwelling on,” Cameron Marotta, senior, said. “We know the most important part of our season is coming up, and that’s what we’re all concentrating on.”

That concentration may prove a valuable asset for the Highlanders, because both teams are evenly matched in their win-loss record and some other numbers. Bay and Homestead both have a 12-8 record on the regular season, but Homestead boasts the better in-conference numbers of the two with ten wins and three losses instead of Bay’s eight wins and four losses.

In addition, both have experienced recent losses to conference teams: Homestead to Germantown and Whitefish Bay with a 70-61 loss against Port Washington.

But currently, the Blue Dukes are ranked lower in the state than the Highlanders: Homestead is placed at number 28 in Wisconsin, whereas Whitefish Bay is ranked at number 33.

However, Homestead’s higher numbers may be deceptive. Last time the Highlanders went up against the Blue Dukes in January, they lost by two points with a final score of 44-42.

Marotta understands the importance of tomorrow’s game for his team. “We have to put together a full 32 minutes against Bay, and hopefully carry that momentum coming off that game and into the playoffs,” he said.

Overall, tomorrow’s match-up may prove unpredictable based off of data alone, but it does promise excitement between two teams that seem to be competitive equals. Come see the action on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Whitefish Bay High School.
