Henry Desmond, senior and Matthew Klimkosky, sophomore, make their final push towards the finish line at yesterday’s meet.

The boys and girls track teams are looking towards their first big meet of the young track season this weekend at Carthage College in Kenosha.

In their first meet of the indoor season this Friday night, the girls are looking forward to a hot start to their season. They will be competing against multiple schools, most of which are from Illinois and Indiana. Out of state competition will provide the girls with an early look into some strong opposition.

Homestead has one returning state qualifier from last year’s team in sophomore distance runner Katie Wegmann. She and the rest of the girls are looking forward to gaining a highly competitive experience from this weekend that will benefit them in the long run. “We are all excited for our first meet,” Ellie Trau, junior, said. All of the varsity track girls have high expectations for what they hope will be a successful season.

The boys varsity track team will compete in their second meet of the season Saturday at Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center at Carthage College. Coach Todd Brawner, boys track head coach, has his athletes well prepared for the physically demanding season ahead. “Rights to Coach Brawner for getting us in shape quickly before our first meet,” Serafino LaGalbo, junior, said. LaGalbo and the rest of the team have been preparing for their first challenge of the season. The boys believe that with coach Brawner at the reins, they are always set for success.

Both the boys and girls track teams are excited to get their indoor season started. The out-of-state schools will provide a tough test for the Highlanders, but both teams have been training hard and look to put their work into motion this weekend.
