Allie Levin, sophomore, competes in the 4 by 800 meter run at Carthage last weekend.

On March 26, the Homestead Girls Track team will be competing at the varsity indoor conference championship at 4 p.m. in the Whitefish Bay High School field house. This meet will highlight the conference’s top contenders including Germantown and the returning conference title-holder Whitefish Bay. Although the Homestead girls came in second at the indoor conference meet last year, this year’s team intends on building off the success of last year’s team.

After a good showing at Carthage, expectations for the girls are set high as they look to finish at the top of the conference. “Our expectations are to go and do the best we can and work on improving our times individually and as a team,” Ellie Trau, junior, said. Senior captain, Jenna Miller included, “Although this is only our second meet this year, I’m feeling pretty confident that all of us will do our best and place well in the meet.

For the team, preparation is key. “Our coaches have been giving us feedback throughout our workouts and prepping us for the specific indoor track at Whitefish Bay,” says Miller. The team works on form drills, getting off the block and hand offs in order to improve their times and perform at a high level.

The girls team graduated a talented senior class last year, but there is promise within the freshman class. “We lost a few valuable runners and jumpers, but we also gained good freshmen this year,” Allison Fochs, junior, stated. Freshmen Zanelle Willemse and Savannah Melan are seen as the upcoming elite of Homestead’s girls track team and are predicted to contribute to the success of the team at the indoor conference meet.

Long distance events have shown evidence of being a strength for the Highlanders.

The girls look towards preparation and motivation to lead them to a indoor conference title. All in all, the girls aim to surpass the success of last year’s squad and build a legacy for themselves as this year’s indoor conference champions.
