The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting colder and the ski team is just around the corner. The Homestead ski team has just begun dryland practices to kick off the 2015-2016 skiing season. Unlike most Mequon teens, Homestead skiers are ready and waiting for that first snowfall to hit the slopes.

Mr. Todd Reineking, guidance counselor, will serve again as head coach for this year’s athletes.

“We lost a lot of great seniors last year,” Charlotte Doering, junior, said. “We were worried about how we were going to do without them, but so many new people have signed up, so we’re really looking forward to the season. I’m very pumped for this year, and I’m especially excited for hot chocolate and team dinners!”

“Since we had such a great season last year, I hope we keep it up and come out on top,” Bridget Woody, senior, said. Last year, in the 2014-2015 season, the girls varsity team, consisting of Kathleen Sullivan, senior; Lizzy Tucker, junior; Charlotte Doering, sophomore; Anna Lauenstein, sophomore; Sarah Barr, senior; and Kimmie Mayer, junior, qualified for state, along with senior Jake Heilmann as an individual athlete.

The team began drylands on Monday, Nov. 2, and will work out three days per week through the rest of the month. “By December, we hope to be practicing on the hill,” Coach Reineking said. This schedule predicts that, on Dec. 7, the skiers should be stepping onto the hill for their first real practice.

Races don’t begin until after winter break, which won’t be until the week of Jan. 4, 2016. The state championship is scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Mt. LaCrosse.

Races are scheduled at Sunburst, Little Switzerland and Holy Hill.

“I’m super excited!” Eric Fretty, senior, said, and he speaks for the whole team since they all look forward to a successful and fun season together. “I’m so ‘fudging’ excited for hot chocolate,” Christianna Gess, senior, whose mom is known for always bringing “the best” hot chocolate to each of the team’s races, said.
