Freshman Friday: Hooks admires all aspects of teamwork

February 6, 2015

The commitment all started in the bleachers for Amanda Hooks, freshman, first watching the players, and now dribbling on the court. For Hooks, basketball was a sport she never anticipated participating in. Yet, through her practices, tournaments and games she learned that it takes, passion, a growth mindset and teamwork.

With passion and skill Hooks tried out, unknowingly, for the girls Highlander Basketball Club (HBC). Recalling on the memory, Hooks mentioned, “My friend didn’t even tell me where we were going.” Luckily for Hooks, she made the team due to her height and the potential she showed both on and off the court.

Her passion for the game motivates her to improve her skills. Through her growth mindset, Hooks didn’t allow her lack of knowledge about the game stop her from playing the game. She continued to educate herself during practice, as well as at home.

Teamwork has been instilled in Hooks since the HBC tryouts in fourth grade and she “has loved the game ever since.” On the freshman team this year, Hooks looks up to those on varsity, and hopes to be in their place one day. Looking even further, Hooks’ ultimate goal is to play college basketball.

With the continuation of this year-long sport Hooks keeps her eyes on the court and to “keep playing” throughout the rest of her years in high school and beyond. With passion, an open mind and teamwork, Hooks has a bright future ahead of her.
