Freshman Friday: Burke Simpson skates through high school

January 15, 2016

Every Friday, Highlander Publications chooses a freshman to be featured in “Freshman Friday,” giving the student population the opportunity to get to know its freshman class. Read below to learn about this week’s freshman, Burke Simpson.

What sports do you play?

I play hockey (and IBA, if that counts).

What hockey team do you play on?

I play on the [Milwaukee] Jr. Admirals.

What position do you play in hockey?

I play the left wing (offense).

What is your favorite thing about playing hockey?

I love the feeling you get when you score a goal or have a good shift. I also love the complexity of the game. It’s not just something you can understand in a few months. I love the physical aspects of the game, even though I’m not that good at hitting. But it’s just overall a really competitive sport and I’m a really competitive person.

How long have you been playing hockey?

I have been playing since I was four. My parents put me on skates as soon as I could walk.

Do you have any siblings?

I have two older brothers; Reid and Cole Simpson. Reid never went to Homestead but Cole played varsity hockey here last year and is now in college at LaCrosse.

Do you have any pets?

We have one dog. His name is Fuji. No surprise we named him after Reid’s favorite goalie.

Who is your role model and why?

My role model is my brother Cole. He is a very nice kid and I know that he did pretty well in school, but he is more so my role model for hockey because he is a great player. He saw the ice really well which got a few college teams interested in him.

If you could be a sandwich, what kind would you be?

I would definitely be a turkey sandwich from Jimmy John’s.

What have you enjoyed most about high school so far?

There are a lot of kids so you meet new people every trimester. Also, Ms. Kelly. She’s pretty cool.

What are you looking forward to in the rest of your high school career?

I am really looking forward to taking Team Sports. I am planning on taking it for a few years and it sounds like a lot of fun.
