The Super Highlanders stomp over conference leaders in Homecoming game
October 11, 2014
Homestead’s varsity football team prevailed over Germantown with a 35-30 win on Oct. 10. With many ups and downs throughout the game, the boys fought hard to deliver a Homecoming victory.
Going into the game, the team was excited to have an opportunity to tear down the current conference leaders; however, “this is the most important game of the year and is a necessary win in order for us to have a chance to claim the conference title, so we are also very nervous,” Jack Popp, junior, said.
Nick Allen, senior quarterback, added, “We must stay humble going into the game and work our hardest until the end.”
The players had a lot to prepare for; consequently, the coaches did too. Mr. Dave Keel, head coach, said, “We spend a lot of time running Germantown plays so that our kids get to know their opponents.” The preparation for a game is a long process, and it paid off.
Starting off the game strong, Matt Winters, junior, put up six points, followed by Nick Allen’s run in for the two-point conversion. Germantown retaliated quickly, however, and Homestead went down 21-8.
Homestead didn’t give up and answered with another touchdown by Winters to tie it up at 21. Matt Winters had all three touchdowns by the end of the third quarter. Later, Allen ran the ball into bring Highlanders up 28-24 with 11 minutes left to play.
Winters could not be stopped. He scored a fourth touchdown in the 4th quarter, putting the Highlanders up 35-30. As seconds ran off the clock, Homestead triumphed over Germantown, living up to this week’s Homecoming label “Super Highlanders.”
After the game, Winters commented on his role in the victory. “It feels good. I am going to go out with my parents and celebrate with my teammates.”
Coach Keel talked about what this game meant for the team. “They learned they can rally, and good things can happen when you play hard. This puts us in a tie for first place, and winning a Homecoming game is always nice.”
