Student Council holds annual dog wash

May 18, 2015

Dogs throughout the community left the Feed Bag Pet Supply in Mequon this past Saturday spotless thanks to Student Council’s annual dog wash and cook out.

All of the dog washing, brat brewing and baked good selling aimed to raise funds for the Fairy Dog Mother Project. “It’s a project the Feed Bag formed that supplies food to Ozaukee’s The Family Food Sharing Pantry to allow people who are financially stressed or undergoing hard times to be able to pick up dog and cat food for their pets,” Mark Haslam, manager of the Feed Bag, said.

For each dog washed at the event,$15 of the $20 was donated to the Fairy Dog Mother Project along with all of the proceeds from the cook out and bake sale. Karen Vangalder, dog owner, said, “This event is great because the price was excellent and my dog really needed a bath.”

Ultimately seeking to keep pets and their families together, the Feed Bag has donated over 17,000 pounds of food to The Family Food Sharing Pantry through fundraisers and donations.

Homestead’s affiliation with this project began four years ago when the idea was pioneered by a member of the Student Council. “Our freshman year, Nicole Martin had this idea and she told me all about it. I became really interested, and ever since then I’ve been helping out as much as I can,” Hanna Tseng, senior, said.

As the dogs soaked up the suds, the students soaked up their cuteness. “I love working with the dogs because they are super cute and helping out makes me feel really good because it’s all going to a good cause,” Sammy Puhl, senior, said. Puhl has helped out with the event for two years now and always looks forward to it.

Overall, the event raised a total of $1,110, bringing the total donation after four years to $4,700 to the Fairy Dog Mother Project.
