Freshman Friday: Thais Marques runs her way through the halls of Homestead

Every Friday, Highlander Publications chooses a freshman to be featured in “Freshman Friday,” giving the student population the opportunity to get to know its freshman class. Read below to learn about this week’s freshman, Thais Marques.

Which middle school did you attend?
Steffen Middle School.

During the cross country meet on Friday, Oct. 16 in Brown Deer Park, Thais Marques, freshman, runs and achieves a personal record. Marques finished the race with a time of 20 minutes and 27 seconds and placed 25th. “I'm so happy because I got a personal record; however, I I wish I earned my goal of getting below 20. The team did well considering the fact that almost everybody got a personal record, and I really liked the course because it was flat and fast.”

Why did you decide to run cross country?
I always liked to run, so I decided to join the team!

How does it feel to run varsity your freshman year?
Running varsity is somewhat stressful, but the girls are amazing.

Do you have any siblings?
I have one younger brother, Thiago, who is in sixth grade.

So far, what is the best part about freshman year?
The best part so far has been attending the football games!

What is your favorite class and who is your favorite teacher at Homestead?
My favorite class is World Studies, and my favorite teacher is Mrs. Grimm because even though she is tough, she teaches very well, making class fun everyday.

Who is your role model?
Nelson Mandela.

Do you have a favorite quote?
“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take”- Wayne Gretzky.
