Police conduct search in Homestead parking lot, several vehicles targeted
Police officers and trained canines conducted a search of student and staff vehicles in the Homestead parking lot last Friday, March 18 “in the interest of promoting a safe and healthy school environment,” Principal Brett Bowers said in a letter to parents.
According to the letter, the search was randomly scheduled and “did not occur in response to any specific situation or circumstance here at school.”
The canines did suspect a “small number” of vehicles in the parking lot, after which police officers and a member of Homestead administration searched the vehicles in question in the presence of the students.
“The dogs alerted on several vehicles and evidence of drug use was located,” Officer Lance Wegner, school liaison officer, said.

ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHARE MY OPINION!
Everything is “after the fact.” We need to “cut to the core.” Police going through students cars. Why???
Why is there such a huge addiction problem i.e. need for alcohol, drugs (heroin, which kills so easily)? Young people should be high on life alone..why do they need to kill or deaden their pain or get high to simply feel happy?
This is a scary world…a selfish world, a “How much money can we make fast” world, a technological world, with less and less meaningful conversation. People don’t take the time to really talk with and get to know others, except superficially. I’ve watched students (friends?) sitting in groups staring at their cell phones. True communication is disappearing.
Student’s stress level is huge..honestly, if most adults had to do what these children/adolescents/college students are asked to do…could they do it? I am a teacher and my colleague spoke of her 1st grade students (4 of them) who were on anti-depressants…this horrifies me! they are babies and are already on this path.
Sports used to be a way of getting to know friends..learn sportsmanship, enjoy the spirtit of comraderie…now it’s “select” teams (which exclude), non-stop practice and games so there is no family time, etc. etc. etc.
Minds are swimming with expectations. Does imagination have time to exist anymore?
We are going in the wrong direction. We need to back up before it’s too late.
