Boys lacrosse starts off the season in the right direction

Number 28, Owen Robbins, sophomore, runs off the field for a change against Franklin on Tuesday.

It’s the start of a new era at Homestead High School. The newly developed team, Homestead’s boys lacrosse, has started up the season completely different than anyone expected them to and the team is looking to make this first season the best it can be.

Their first-ever game took place here at Homestead on Friday,  April 8 as the team took down Kenosha pretty handily winning by a score of 13-3. Owen Robbins, sophomore, scored the first goal in Homestead Lacrosse history halfway through the first quarter.

The teams went back and forth until the score became 3-2 for the Highlanders halfway through the second quarter. After that, the Highlanders took control over Kenosha controlling the rest of the game. Anthony Kenin, senior goalie, made many quality saves throughout the game allowing the Highlanders to stay on top.

“I think we have a lot of depth on our team this season and we can make it far if we keep playing like we can. I do my best to stop all the shots I can and I know my defense is there to help me,” Kenin said.

Mikey Gebhardt, sophomore, and Andy Buchanan, junior, were able to run the ball all around the field opening up the scoring opportunities. Jordan Kranich, senior, also was able to move the ball very well allowing more chances for his teammates.

“Our team is looking really strong and deep and we are staying on top of our games and powering through,” Kranich said. “Our coach knows what he’s doing and is a perfect coach and leader for the job. All other teams don’t regard us as a solid competitor because we are a first year program. What they don’t know is most of us have been playing already for the past few years through other programs. We look forward to maintaining our rank and achieving our goal of state champs,” he said.

The team’s second game of the season also ended in a victory for the Highlanders; however, the game was a lot closer and the two teams battled all throughout the game. Homestead came out on top with a 7-6 win against Franklin on Tues. Apr. 12 with Franklin giving the Highlanders a little scare towards the end of the game.

Jordan Zall, senior, Johnny Erpenbeck, junior, and Cole Tietyen, sophomore, all netted two goals with Robbins scoring one in between.

“We have had some ups and downs, but we are a new program who is 3-0. We’ve seen some great things and there is lots of room for improvement,” Erpenbeck said.

Hank Mckeegan, sophomore, opened up many opportunities for the Highlanders on offense. The defense consisting of Gebhardt, Mitch Lauenstein, senior, and Michael Fehrenbach, junior, kept Franklin from tieing the game up with under 30 seconds to go.

The Highlanders kept rolling though as they took down Brookfield on Wed. Apr. 13 by a score of 8-7. The team has started off the new season 3-0 within the first week and are getting hot. After last week, the team was ranked 3rd in the state and with its two convincing wins this week, the team should be able to keep its spot and possibly move up in the rankings.

The boys next game is on Tues. Apr. 19 at 7:30 and Kettle Moraine High School. Come out and support the newly developed team!
