HHS Unplugged: A Night of Spoken Word and Song took place on Friday, May 20. Madina Jenks caught some of the presenters in action.

Natalie Aldridge, senior, drinks a cup of chai tea after HHS Unplugged ended. Students were asked to bring mugs and teabags so that all of the Unplugged attendees could partake in a cup of tea together. “I decided to attend Homestead Unplugged because I thought it would be a good break from Netflix,” Aldridge stated.

Jake Schaum and Ethan Gilerovich, seniors, sing the song “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion at HHS Unplugged. Schaum and Gilerovich chose to perform “My Heart Will Go On” because it is their favorite song. “I felt like I needed to do something besides rapping and screaming at the audience, so I chose to sing that song,” Schaum said.

Hannah Bentley, sophomore, presents her poem “And the Giraffes Are Eaten Alive” at HHS Unplugged. Bentley wrote the poem in her bedroom a couple of days before the event occurred. “I was really nervous, but it was nice to be able to perform my piece,” Bentley stated.

Conlin Steinert, senior, performs a spoken word titled “Who Are We?” at HHS Unplugged. Steinert wrote the piece a day before the event during his first hour creative writing class. “My poem was all based on the line,” Steinert said. “I started with that line, and then it went from there.”

Kia Pourmodheji, senior, performs the song “Flowers in Your Hair” at HHS Unplugged. This event marked the first time that Pourmodheji played a song solo in front of a crowd. “It was nice to get it off the bucket list and to do a single performance,” Pourmodheji stated. “It was definitely a good experience getting it out of the way, but it was also great playing it for a crowd, because that way, everything came more naturally.”

Jesse Honigberg, senior, shares a satirical poem at HHS Unplugged. Honigberg’s poem criticized the current generation’s overuse of technology. “I came up with this poem after watching videos about this generation, and I wrote it for my creative writing class,” Honigberg stated.

Jenny Lietz, junior, performs a poem at HHS Unplugged. Lietz wrote the poem an hour before the event began. “I wrote it because I was just really getting fed up with jerks being jerks,” Lietz remarked.

Sarah Mai, senior, shares a joke about Adele before introducing the next performer at HHS Unplugged. Mai found the jokes on the fly based on audience reactions. “Presenting and emceeing were very fun because I got to interact with the audience, which is a little more special than just reading something pre-prepared,” Mai said.

Philip Zuccaro, junior, plays a classical guitar version of the song “Yesterday’ by the Beatles at HHS Unplugged. Zuccaro played this piece every day for the sake of satisfaction. “Performing this song was fairly easy since it’s one of my favorite songs to play,” Zuccaro stated. “It’s also a song that I play every day slightly ironically.”

Teighlor McGee, alumni from the Class of 2015 and rising sophomore at St. Catherine University, performs a spoken word at HHS Unplugged. McGee presented this piece at Minnesota SLAM, a poetry competition, and received third place. “It’s a really personal piece for me,” McGee said.
