Continuing its relatively great first season as a Homestead sport, the boys lacrosse team took down its rival Marquette in a hard-fought comeback win by a score of 11-10 on Tuesday, May 24.

The team started off very slow and “were not looking like the team we are and can be,” Jordan Kranich, senior, said. The boys were down 7-3 after the first quarter.

“After a 30-minute postponement because of the weather, we turned it around and played a lights-out game. Andrew Brooks, freshman, was key on faceoffs, Cole Tietyen, sophomore, had four goals and Mitch Lauenstein, senior, played some great defense and forced some amazing turnovers,” Kranich said.

Tietyen had a very good game and led his team to victory. “I just feel really good about helping the team beat a very tough Marquette program. It was definitely more of a team effort in my eyes,” Tietyen said.

Just like Kranich said, Lauenstein, a captain, played some heads-up defense and put lots of pressure on the Marquette forwards. “To be a captain is a huge honor, and I am proud that my teammates see me as a leader. Being the top defender is just a combination of everyone working together to push everyone to be better,” Lauenstein said.

A comeback win against a tough rival team like this can always impact the team greatly and give them lots of momentum.

“To us, this game means that we have no doubts that we can make it to the state game,” Launstein said. “This game gives us so much momentum that it’s insane. We have enough energy to carry us through playoffs and beyond.”

“A comeback win like this definitely boosts our team’s morale and determination, which is for sure needed with the playoffs right around the corner,” Tietyen said.

With playoffs coming soon, this comeback win does a lot for the team’s confidence going into playoffs.

“A comeback like that is the best feeling in the world. You’re down, and you find it within yourself to push through and succeed,” Kranich said. “A victory like this means that we have no doubt that we can make it to state.”

“This game gives us an incredible amount of momentum to propel us through the rest of the season and through playoffs,” Kranich said.
