Thiensville is a village in Ozaukee County, Wisc. with a population of 3,150. Although what some people might not realize is that Thiensville is filled with small businesses with intriguing stories and interesting backgrounds — this series will cover such hidden gems nestled in this quaint town.

Week five: This week features an interview with Rocky Kruegel. He has been an avid record collector for over 50 years and is one of the music industry’s most knowledgeable sources. Stardust Records contains one of the largest collections of music in the state—including rare albums and more than 35,000 vintage 45s—spanning all decades and genres. Hard-to-find records are their specialty. They also buy collections and get new items in every day. Open Fridays and Saturdays, or most days by appointment only.

How did you get started: Well, I was painting cars up until 1980, and I didn’t want to go back to school, so I decided to sell records, my first love.

Why did you get started: I used to have a record player in my car, and that was in high school, so I decided to continue the crazy business of buying and selling old records.

What makes your company unique: I sell only in the store. I don’t sell anything online, hands-on only. I get it at the store and I sell it at the store

What do you want your customers to know: Well, we have a big selection of 45’s especially, we have albums as well, 78’s, memorabilia. A little bit of everything and the best prices you’ll find anywhere.

Favorite thing in the store: I really like Buddy Holly and of course The Ramones, it’s a bit of a stretch, but I love them. Buddy Holly is also my favorite artist. 

What made you interested in records: My father was a big band leader in the 1930’s and it kind of carried over to me.

What is one of your rarest items: Right now we have a Bettie Page album up on my wall. She was a very famous model in the 50’s and it is hard to find her stuff because it didn’t sell well and I am selling it for $50.

What is your most expensive item: We have some doo wop records that go up to $200 to $300.
Least expensive: I have a basement full of dollar albums. 6,000 of them for only one dollar each. People love it!
