Gallery Night let artists shine

On May 3, Homestead’s National Art Honors Society (NAHS) chapter held their fourth gallery night in the James Barr Auditorium lobby.  The showcase featured works created by Homestead students in visual art classes. Additionally, the showcase served as the induction ceremony for new National Art Honors Society members.

National Art Honors Society aims to help students become the best artists they can be while raising awareness for art education in the area.  Molly Plamann, senior, is the president of Homestead’s NAHS chapter this year. “This year has been super fun because I’ve gotten to hang out with my best friends and favorite teachers. Gallery night was a huge success. We had a ton of amazing artwork and lots of people showed up,” Plamann said.

Gallery night allows any visual art student to display their work regardless if they are a member of NAHS.  “Every artist at Homestead has a unique and exceptional style. I feel that the gallery night showcase always represents this very well and gives all of our student artists a chance to have their own display,” Parus Tunio, junior and NAHS member, said.

Several awards were presented to artists for their spectacular art.  The categories included emerging artist, student’s choice and visual art department’s choice.

Award winners were presented with gift bags provided by the Milwaukee Public Art Museum and Blick Art Materials.  Elizabeth Khomenkov, junior, was one of the student choice winners for her piece titled Clock and Skull. “The prize was great!.  I received a sketchbook and a $25 gift card to Blick Art Materials which is a ton for art supplies,” Khomenkov said.

The art displayed consisted of many media such as paint, pencil, pastel, photography, digital media, ceramics and metals.  Katherine Nowak, art teacher, is not surprised that the gallery displays so much variety. “There’s so much different media and creativity that the students bring to the show,” Nowak said.

Gallery Night is a great way for artists to receive praise and critique about their work.  Sharing art with friends and family is an extremely valuable and memorable experience for all artists.
