The Crucible by Arther Miller is the play of the fall for the theater department as they begin rehearsals.
Set in the early 1690s, The Crucible illustrates challenges for people during the Salem Witch Trials, specifically highlighting John Proctor (Matthew Seiberlich, senior) and Elizabeth Proctor (Emme Buesing, senior, as they face accusations of practicing witchcraft from Abigail Williams (Nadia Haswell, junior) and other young girls. The director of the show shares why she chose to take on The Crucible.
“Arthur Miller is a famous playwright and The Crucible is definitely… of the plays you do at the high school level, that’s the one you do, it has the most people. It’s a play I like doing, I’ve done it on a small scale level before; it’s just an American classic that I think students should study, both in school and also like performance study,” Figg-Franzoi said.
The production will be held Nov. 1, 2, and 3. You can purchase tickets through the GoFan app when the dates get closer.
Cast members agree with Figg on the value of the play and attending the production.
Rachel Anderson, a senior playing Mary Warren, said, “I think it’s fun because it’s scary, and my favorite scene is the one where they like try to accuse Mary and I think it’s spooky, and it’s scary, and you don’t really know what’s happening, which kind of adds to the suspense.”
For others who want to be involved in the play rather than only watching it, opportunities are still available to participate in the production of The Crucible.
Megan Anderson, a sophomore and member of the costume crew shared, “students can join crew, or I’m sure [they] could still join costumes, or be an usher.”
Members in the theater department enjoy participating for various reasons.
R. Anderson said her favorite part of theater is “the community, I like being around people. I feel like you make some of your best friends in theater.”
