This week, I will be talking about some of the jobs the Air Force offered to me. Many people don’t know that you can do almost any job you can think of in the military. I researched various jobs by looking at the Air Force website, watching TikTok videos, and asking my uncle who served in the Army and is now an instructor for his thoughts. I also compared my ASVAB scores to see which jobs I qualify for.
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test consists of questions that range in difficulty. It adjusts based on your ability level, providing questions that are best suited for you. The scores are percentile-based, with the highest possible score being 99. The Air Force requires a minimum score of 31 for general applicants and 50 for GED holders. The test is divided into four categories: Mechanical, Administrative, General, and Electrical.
My results were not the best. My overall score was 49: Mechanical: 40, Administrative: 52, General: 47, and Electrical: 51. I went into the process hoping to get either Dental Assistant or Security Forces, which is essentially a police officer role (and I would like to become a K9 officer within that career). While these two fields are on opposite ends of the spectrum, I would honestly be happy with either one and the different opportunities they would provide.
Once you receive your list of possible jobs, you create a top ten list, which is considered when they assign you your job. Thankfully, both Dental Assistant and Security Forces were on my list, along with other options such as:
Public Health: In this role, you would educate Airmen on how to navigate outbreaks (such as the flu) or other illnesses.
Diet Therapy: This is a prerequisite to becoming a dietitian or nutritionist.
Mental Health Services: This is a stepping stone to becoming a therapist.
Pavements and Construction Equipment: This job maintains runways, roadways, and parking lots.
Pest Management: This role involves controlling and preventing infestations of plants and animals, and working with medical personnel to control health hazards.
HVAC: This job ensures that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are functioning properly at the base.
Aircrew Flight Equipment: This role involves making sure all emergency equipment is in working order.
Traffic Management: This role involves packaging, classifying, and arranging personal property and cargo for shipment or storage.
Along with many others.
