After coming off two long seasons and seeing little improvement, the girls lacrosse team is working towards a win. With a focus on building the team relationship, Coach Megan Coyne is
hopeful for a season with better results.
“Most important to me this season is growing as a team and building the players to be strong players that work well together as a team,” Coyne said.
Coming into her fufth season coaching girls lacrosse, Conye describes how she is excited to see the team come together and continue to grow.
“I coach because I love the sport and I love sharing the sport with others. Coaching high school girls is so amazing because watching the girls grow throughout the season is very fun and rewarding,” Conye said.
Helping her with leading the team are captains Kaeleigh Korn, senior, and Lily Dyer, junior.
Korn has been playing lacrosse for four years, starting in high school and shortly after joining a club team. After moving to Wisconsin from Missouri, lacrosse has helped her find her place at Homestead High School. When she moved to Mequon, lacrosse season was just about to start, providing a way for her to meet new people outside of the classroom. She also saw a change in the way high school lacrosse is run.
“My old school was enjoyable, but it was more rigid, strict and serious. Most of the girls on the team played club lacrosse and our game outcomes were more often on the winning side. I loved the girls on that team and our competitive drive. On the other hand, lacrosse at Homestead has changed my perspective on the sport a lot. The coaches play a big role in the experience. They are absolutely hilarious and some of the most supportive people I have ever met. They do not take any crap from anyone, but also know how to have a good time. I’ve learned to become more relaxed and lead a group, helping the team feel welcoming. At Homestead, lacrosse is a sport for anyone to join, no matter your skill and I really admire that,” Korn said.
Another player who loves the girls’ lacrosse team is Kate Baden, junior.
“My favorite thing about playing lacrosse is working together as a team and the fast-paced action within the game. I love getting to play with my best friends and have fun within practice and games,” Baden said.
Baden has been playing lacrosse on and off since fifth grade. Her experience allows her to become a likely candidate for captain next year, and she already has ideas for being a good
leader.
“I am planning on being a leader next year by getting the underclassmen engaged and involved within the team. I want them to love the sport as much as I do, so I want to make it as fun as possible everyday,” Baden said.
With new captains and goals, the Homestead girls’ lacrosse team is looking forward to a fun-filled season, hopefully with more wins.
