While spring wraps up and thoughts of summer trickles in, seniors prepare to graduate high school and begin their next chapter. Alongside hard goodbyes and a long list of ‘lasts,’ many prepare to open their horizons and begin studies at the collegiate level in the fall. While the admissions process prompted pain and agony over essays and transcript-sending stress, it also boosted morale as students were accepted into top universities for their effort, talent and leadership emulated in their short four years of high school. For Seniors Sara Yesufu, Sean O’Byrne and Kevin Wan, these admirable traits were their ticket into the 2nd highest-ranking University in the country, only second to Princeton: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Sean O’Byrne plans on majoring in Mechanical Engineering, MIT’s highest-ranked program and launchpad into the future.
“I chose MIT because of the outstanding undergraduate research opportunities and course variety. I am unsure where I see myself, but I know I will be an active and assertive participant in whatever occupation/resolutions I commit myself to. This is also a part of the reason why I chose MIT as many courses are organized so students can learn actively; hands-on courses and research are commonplace,” O’Byrne said.
O’Byrne also plans to pursue sports at the collegiate level, committing to MIT’s Football team as well as Track and Field.
Sara Yesufu, Senior, also plans to expand her horizons at MIT in the fall. She is planning to study Biophysics on a premedical track. She is most excited for MIT’s academic community.
“I chose MIT because, out of all of the schools I was accepted to, MIT provided the most STEM-focused environment and the most rigorous academics. MIT also has such a vibrant community; I am so excited to meet people who are as academically inclined as I am,” Yesufu said.
For Yesufu, MIT unfolds the potential for a bright, space-filled future.
“I see myself in neurosurgery residency or conducting research on Mars. Whichever comes first!” Yesufu said.
Kevin Wan plans on studying Mathematics. He also committed to MIT for the academic atmosphere, as well as looming research opportunities.
“Academically, MIT is very rigorous in STEM, and I think that will push me to develop my skills better than at any other college. MIT also has a lot of undergraduate research, which is something I hope to do. Also, I like the MIT culture of work hard, play hard. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and becoming more independent,” Wan said.
