Adrian Smith, sophomore, is courageous. It’s a quality that can be defined in many ways from Merriam Webster’s simple description of “the ability to do something that frightens one” to the more nebulous concepts of being “mighty” that are hung up all over school. For Smith, courage is practical; “I think lots of moments in the day are small acts of courage” he mentioned, “whether it be raising my hand to answer a question or helping someone that drops something.” Through the course of our interview, Smith often spoke of the tendency to overestimate the worst case scenario; a feeling which is, in varying degrees, present to many everyday. He said, “with the anxiety I experience there’s always the sense…that people are watching every minute action for something to judge,” “but logically… I don’t believe that consciously people are ever working against me.” Even with any apprehension he might face in daily activity, Smith is an active and valued member of the drama club, forensics and latin club communities. He will no doubt continue to embody Homestead’s core values in his passion for writing and creativity throughout his next years in high school.
