Homestead Highlanders take down the Nicolet Knights

The Homestead Wrestlers talk post-game after a victory over Nicolet. Homestead is undefeated to start the season and has their next match Saturday December 20 at Appleton West. Bryce Counsellor elaborates on how to get through a long match, “When it comes down to it, the match is completely mental. If you keep telling yourself you’re tired, than you’ll only get more tired.”

Gage Zupke, senior, says that he has seen “a good will to get better” over the course of this early season. Homestead went into Nicolet and came out champions as they drilled their way to a 48-27 victory.

The meet saw six pins in total, four for Homestead and two for Nicolet.  Drew Waller, senior, handled and defeated Savion Dean over the course of three periods, while on the other hand, Doug Lennon, junior, faced the tough Teague Wolton and was pinned.  Those two wrestlers were highlighted earlier this week as the two more talented Nicolet wrestlers.

Bryce Counsellor, senior, kicked off the meet with a match that went across three rounds and saw lead changes all throughout. “I try to think of how tired the other guy must be. I use that as part of my motivation, to have just that little edge that is needed to win. I keep on telling myself that if I work harder than him in those last 30 seconds I have a chance of surprising him and getting the points I need,” Counsellor said, and he did just that, garnering just enough points over his opponent to win his match.

Mark Usatinsky and Connor Shoultus, seniors, followed up Counsellor’s performance with pins in the first and second period respectively.  Joey Fischer, senior, got the team back on track with a pin in the first after Michael Scheers, junior, and Marcus Messer, sophomore, both came up empty-handed. Following that up, Cooper Hunt, freshman, and Zach Ginkel, sophomore, both were dealt a forfeit as Nicolet had no wrestlers to face off with.

Antoine Bierny, senior, took care of his opponent with a pin in the first period. Lastly, Waller and Lennon had the honors of closing out the match with a win and a loss. “We are young and still have a lot to learn, but we’re going to improve by taking it one step at a time and just going as hard as we can,” Zupke said after the meet.
