Highlanders trump Port Washington for the second time
Faced with adversity, Homestead overcame Port Washington’s third quarter run and ran away with a victory Friday night. The Lady Highlanders outscored Port in three of the four quarters on its way to a 39-30 victory. Homestead now holds an 11-2 record after beating Port for the second time this season.
Homestead had a strong first quarter, outscoring Port Washington 13-6. Christal Hearn, junior, cashed in from behind the arc early on, and Sarah Severson, junior, got hacked-in-the-act on her way to sinking her shot along with a free throw. Hearn led the way that quarter with four points, followed closely by Severson with three.
Port Washington would spend most of the second half chipping away at Homestead’s lead until it was able to tie it up at 17 with under two minutes remaining in the half.
Port Washington’s head coach would then be charged with a technical after arguing over a Port Washington turnover. Homestead proceeded to close out the half on a three point run as Marciarae Harmon, senior, made a free throw after being fouled on a buzzer beater attempt.
Leading 20-17, Homestead was unable to score until late in third after trailing Port Washington. Port started the second half strong, scoring on two quick shots, putting them in a one-point lead for most of the quarter. However, neither team was able to buy a bucket as the third quarter stretched on.
With about three minutes left in the quarter, Homestead went on a surge, scoring four points in thirty seconds. Just like that, Homestead flipped the tables and stole back the lead, closing out the third quarter by making a final free throw and stretching its lead to 25-21.
Homestead broke out of its shooting slump and never looked back, stretching out its lead to nine by the end of the game. Scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter, Homestead had contributions from an array of players. Chloe Marotta, freshman, Harmon, Hearn and Kate Thomas, junior, would all finish the game with over five points.
“We had great communication on offense as well as defense which helped us come up with a win,” Hearn said.
Homestead now starts its five-game home stretch, facing off against the likes of Grafton, Jan. 30; Nicolet, Feb 3; Cedarburg, Feb 6; Plymouth, Feb 7 and Milwaukee Vincent, Feb 12.
Key notes: Both Port Washington’s head coach as well as Homestead’s were assessed technical fouls, one in the first half and the other in the second half. On Feb. 3, both the Homestead girls team as well as boys team will partake in the Red & White Spirit Night, celebrating a double-header versus North Shore Conference rival Nicolet.
