Number 13, Will Gebhardt, senior, looks on as he gets ready for the face off in the hockey team’s 4-0 loss against University School of Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Coming off a week of highs and lows, Highlander sports look forward to a week they hope will be full of victories.

Boys hockey fell short of a win last week, finishing with a record of 0-3 against three of the top teams in the state.

The team lost to University School of Milwaukee 4-0 on Tuesday despite the support of the crowd in the stands. The team then took on Bayport on Friday and lost 7-1, giving up the most goals in a game yet this season. The team looked to rebound against Appleton United on Saturday but fell short, losing 5-3 in a tight, well-fought game.

“Although we did not get the outcome we would like, our games last week were a step up for the team as a whole. We’re going to keep working hard on developing our game and shaping our identity this week,” Sean Driscoll, junior, said. The team takes on Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs this Saturday in a major sectional game.

The boys basketball team went 1-1 last week, losing to Wisconsin Lutheran 54-51 in a tight matchup. The team took on conference rival Port Washington, however, and came out with a win with a score of 75-57.

“Against Wisconsin Lutheran, we struggled playing one on one defense and left a few shooters open as we were forced to help on the drive too much. Against Port Washington, we shot the ball very well and kept the lead extended as we knocked down free throws and played good defense without fouling,” Jacob Urban, junior, said. The team takes on Grafton, another conference rival, on Friday and comes back with another game on Saturday facing off against a Marquette team that is always tough to beat.

The Lakeshore Lightning girls hockey team had a relaxing week sans games. The team is back this week against Arrowhead on Thursday and against Brookfield on Saturday, away and home, respectively.

The wrestling team participated in two invitationals this past week. Despite injuries from Gage Zupke (foot) and Bryce Counsellor (knee), the team still performed well. Drew Waller, senior, took third place in his weight class followed by other Homestead teammates. The team looks to keep it going with a meet on Tuesday against Port Washington at home, Thursday at Whitefish Bay and an invitational meet in the Wisconsin Dells on Saturday.

The boys swim team also did not compete in any meets last week but hopes to come back strong this week with a meet on Wednesday at Whitefish Bay.

Homestead’s gymnastics team took sixth out of 17 teams in its own Highlander Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17 and performed to its standards at the invitational at Arrowhead on Saturday, Jan. 24, placing fifth. The team looks to come out victorious with a win against Germantown and Menomonee Falls at Menomonee Falls on Wednesday.

The girls basketball team won a big conference game against Port Washington, 39-30, later last week, giving the team its second win against Port Washington this season. The girls look to continue this winning streak by taking on rival Grafton on Friday.
