Carly Schulz, senior, catches a pitch during warm-ups on April, 16, before the win against the Grafton Blackhawks.

The Homestead girls softball team fought back from an early deficit against Grafton and ended up winning the game 11-10 in seven innings of play on Thursday, April 16. The first inning did not look promising for the Highlanders after they allowed five runs to be scored making it 5-0 Blackhawks, after one inning.

Carly Schulz, senior captain, had three RBIs on the day while fellow captain Hannah Behnken, senior, added two more and Margaux Wilson, senior and Allie Beckers, junior, also hit in two runs. Although the team was behind for the majority of the game, they rallied together as a team.

“I was so proud of everyone for fighting how they did because a good team comes back like that so it proved to everyone how good we are,” Behnken said. This year’s team is showing promise early, and they only plan to improve from here.

In the last two innings of the game, the Highlanders battled back and brought their “A” game. A series of events led to the victory. Behnken hit a two run home run, Schulz got a double, and Beckers drove in Schulz with a single for the game winning run in the 7th inning.

The whole game was a team effort and everyone feels very confident about the dynamic of the team this year. “Everyone contributed in this game, from cheering while someone was up to bat or making a great play on the field,” Emily Polk, sophomore, said.

For the seniors, it’s their last hoorah and they intend to make it count. “I want it to be the most special season of all. I want to go out in every game and have fun and play my hardest in every game to make this team as successful as possible,” Behnken said.

Even though the game was going in the opposite direction the team wanted, they did not let that defeat them. “ what represents us as a team is that the whole game we kept fighting and we never once doubted ourselves and i think that is what makes us a championship team,” Beckers said.
