In 2014, the Homestead boys golf team earned the title of the best team in the state after winning the WIAA State Golf Tournament.

And now, almost exactly one year later, the team has secured its place in the tournament and is ready to fight for that title once again after a strong performance at sectionals.  Homestead placed first at the sectionals hosted by the school at River Club of Mequon Tuesday, June 2.

According to Coach Steven O’Brien, “I’m very happy with how sectionals went.  We shot a 309, which is 11 strokes better than our season average and we were able to pull off a sectional championship.”

Blake Anderson, senior, credited the standout performances of the day for the victory, saying that, “The team did great. The lower scores carried the higher scores, exactly what needed to happen.”  The best-performing Homestead team members were Robbie Morway, sophomore, scoring a 74, Charlie Maleki, senior, scoring a 76, and Joey Hobbs, junior, scoring a 77.  Anderson and Max Pasher, sophomore, then then finish off the squad, scoring 85 and 82, respectively.

Although the Highlanders will face fierce competition at the state tournament at University Ridge June 8 and 9 from teams wanting to avenge their losses from last year, Coach O’Brien and the rest of the team are remaining calm.

“First and foremost, we’re going to go down there and enjoy the experience,” Coach O’Brien said.  “Then we’re going to compete and see where that puts us at the end.”
