The girls JV lacrosse team took home their second win of the season with an 8-7 victory against Kenosha on Wednesday, May 25.

Though the rain had delayed the game for two hours, it was clear that the weather did not dampen the team’s spirits. In fact, Karen Leonhardt, junior, mentioned that “rain is good luck; we’ve only ever won in rain.”

Once the game finally started, the girls came out on top as Alex Buchanan, sophomore, scored the first goal. The team had lost to Kenosha earlier this season, so the team was out for blood. Despite the fact that girls lacrosse is known as being less violent than boys lacrosse, Caity Hessling, junior, joked, “I’m determined to hit and knock someone down.”

Continuing through the beginning of the first half, the girls maintained their lead. However, Kenosha fired back with eight minutes left, scoring their first goal. From this point on, the girls began to lose steam and “kind of died down at the end of the first,” as Chelsea Rowe, sophomore, put things.

After a quick water break and some wise words from the coaches, the girls were fired up and ready to take the field again. The team dominated the second half and were on a 4-0 run until Kenosha rose out of the ashes. The opposing team quickly caught up to Homestead, resulting in a 5-5 tie with 11 minutes left in the game.

The last portion of the game was neck and neck. Adding to the tension were the fans who went berserk with each call.  Among the crowd was Bella Brodersen, junior, who said, “It was a really intense and tight game the whole way through.”

With just seconds left in the game, Morgan Bayer, junior, scored the final goal, leading to an 8-7 victory for Homestead. To sum things up, Coach Lenny Carter proclaimed, “It was a great game; the girls battled and we had a lot of fun.”
