The 400 free relay celebrates after beating the Homestead record.

It was an extremely exciting, emotional and record-breaking day for Homestead’s girls varsity swim and dive team. The girls proved they were a force to be reckoned with, winning second place at sectionals, just 49 points behind Cedarburg.

As a whole the team performed remarkably well, having at least one swimmer in the top ten for each event.

“Everyone did amazing and got their best times of the season,” Alex Buchanan, junior, said.

In addition to the team’s stellar performance, they also made Homestead history. Both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay broke the school records for their events.

The team will be taking on state next Saturday with swimmers competing in the following events:

Sami Nickerson: Diving

Lindsey Bjornstad: 50 and 100 Free

Talia Gottlieb: 50 and 100 Free

Leah Tunney: 100 Back

Leah Tunney, Caitlyn Lansing, Talia Gottlieb and Lindsey Bjornstad: 200 Medley Relay

Lindsey Bjornstad, Jayci Scheff, Leah Tunney and Talia Gottlieb: 400 Free Relay

“I am extremely proud with the team as we head to state. The girls have worked very hard throughout the season and it’s great to see it pay off in the end,” Coach Becky Young said.
