Homesteadai??i??s recent dress code alterations have led some students to question Principal Mr. Brett Bowersai??i?? recent decisions to enforce the expectations of dress at school in a more strict manner.

According to a Fresno University study, it is estimated that Ai??ai???almost 25 percent of the nationai??i??s public schools are expected to have a dress code this year.ai???

Although some Homestead students feel that Mr. Bowers is eliciting a personal attack on crop tops and booty shorts, it is only reasonable to assert that he is doing his job.

The debate over whether the dress code is sexist toward girls can be put to rest once it is understood that the latest fashions are the reasons that girls are feeling objectified. Ai??Crop tops and short-shorts are fashionable because they objectify women and expose parts of the body that are not usually exposed in public. Ai??If you really think about it, crop tops are glorified sports bras and booty shorts are glorified underwear.

Of course, girls should be 100 percent comfortable in their own skin, but there is a reason that police officers hand out tickets for public nudity. No one wants to be learning algebra and accidentally catch a glimpse of another student’s private parts. In a perfect world, humans could wear whatever they wanted all the time and never be judged or reprimanded for it, but in reality, rules are created for a reason.

What students choose to wear to school shows what they are truly comfortable in. Walking the halls of Homestead, Ai??there is no doubt I see variations of the same outfit: crop-tops and high-waisted shorts. However, although those particular pieces of clothing show excess amount of skin, it further signifies that those girls are comfortable with their own bodies.

Recently, Principal Bowers has been cracking down on the dress-code, sending students home who donai??i??t fulfill the dress codeai??i??s requirements. Jackie Chang, senior, recently was approached by Mr. Bowers because her shirt showed too much midriff. ai???I wasnai??i??t allowed to go to class until I put something over my shirt,ai??? Chang explained.

The reasoning behind the enforced dress code leads back to outfits distracting students from their school work. Jennifer Wiess-Wolf, director of special projects of Maplewood middle school, New Jersey, voiced, ai???Dress code continues to be a concern, specifically with our female students.
