Students and staff inspire at Homestead TED talks

 

 

On Thursday March 8, Homestead’s SHIFT (Students Helping Impact Foster Teens) Club held their annual HomesTED Talks event in the orchestra room. The evening program featured several student and faculty speakers. The SHIFT Club event was led by Rachel Writz, senior and SHIFT president, and Erin Carley, senior. Students and teachers alike stood up and spoke about the things that had personal significance to them. A main theme of the night revolved around students standing up and using their voices in wake of the Parkland shooting. Below is a list of the speakers:

Susan Godfrey, physical education teacher, who spoke about being the “Nice Kid.”

Paul Sivanich, science teacher, discussed the parallels between the 60’s and today in ‘Talking ‘Bout my Generation.”

Brett Bowers, principal, who told a personal narrative titled, ‘Two Truths and a Lie.”

Julius Wilkerson, senior, presented a self authored poem, ‘The Precipice of Fear.”

Zack Zens, sophomore, performed a self authored poem entitled, “Blackberries” about the addiction to technology today.

James Engle, social studies teacher, talked about being adventurous while traveling.

Angelina Cicero, English teacher, spoke about when the right time to disobey was in her speech, “When to Disobey.”

Hannah Malicky, senior, performed her self authored poem, “Awake.”

Malika Dakawa, freshman, spoke about, “Why Teen Engagement In Politics Matters.”

Silma Berrada, senior, also spoke about her experiences in a college class.
