Homestead’s girls’ gymnastics team achieves victory in first meet of season
Flipping, flying, tumbling and twisting, Homestead’s girls gymnastics team, led by senior captains Nia Feaster and Tori Puhl, reigned victorious in their first meet of the season against Grafton and Cedarburg. The final score was a nail-biting 129.2 to 128.6.
“I think we did pretty well for our first meet of the season,” Dominique Wilkerson, senior, said. Tori Puhl, senior, said that while there were “multitudes of small errors in all of [their] routines,” after more practice “everything will fall into place.”
It hasn’t been an easy start to the season for the team. After losing multiple athletes to injuries, Coach John Glass said that he hopes his girls will heal so that he can place them back in rotation and polish his team’s skills. But Coach Glass also agreed with Wilkerson, stating that “considering this is our first meet, and the number of girls with injuries, we did as expected or even better.”
Despite the injuries and setbacks, Coach Glass, Wilkerson, and Puhl were in agreement that the team dynamic this year is positive and encouraging, perhaps even more so than in years past. “The girls get along great…there’s a great synergy within them. There’s no rivalry…everyone’s friends,” Coach Glass said. Wilkerson concurred, stating, “the most fun part of meets is just cheering for your teammates.”
The girls will take their team spirit into competition again when they face off against Nicolet and West Allis on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. in Homestead’s small gym.
