Learn the basics of the new Snapchat update
The ultimate teen status symbol, being in someone’s “best friends” Snapchat list has been eliminated — inciting panic in some frequent users. The picture-messaging app announced a massive update on Tuesday, Jan. 27, discarding the ability for users to view their friends “best friends” and replacing it with “Discover.”
Discover features content from media outlets that the social network has partnered with. As of a week ago, those outlets are CNN, Comedy Central, Cosmopolitan, Daily Mail, ESPN, Food Network, National Geographic, People, Vice, Yahoo News and Warner Music Group.
According to Snapchat, “Discover is the result of collaboration with world-class leaders in media to build a storytelling format that puts the narrative first. This is not social media.”
Additionally, Snapchat announced that it would premiere a superhero series called “Snapperhero.” In it, suggestions from fans will influence the shows 12-episode story. Along with Snapchat stories, episodes of the show will disappear 24 hours after they are first made available.
More importantly, users want to know where their “Best Friends” went. Users have flooded Twitter with complaints about the removal of the feature allowing anyone to see the three people a user most frequently interacts with. “I’ve been hearing rumours that Snapchat was bringing best friends back, but it doesn’t really matter to me,” Abbie Bogli, senior, said.
According to Huff Post, Snapchat did not respond to a request for comment on the changes regarding the disappearance of “best friends.”
While the newest update upset many frequent stalkers, for others they simply didn’t care. “I don’t mind the new update. I think the Discover addition is cool,” Kelly Ochocki, senior, said.
