Homestead boys track team races toward new season
After finishing third in the race for the North Shore Conference title and qualifying four individuals in five events last year, tomorrow will mark the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season for the Homestead boys track and field team. The boys will start up their 2015 competition at 4 p.m. tomorrow in the field house, facing off against Germantown, Sussex Hamilton, Grafton and Menomonee Falls.
While the team is still piecing things together after beginning practice on March 9, they have started strong with a solid base of senior leadership to propel them toward victory. Throwers David Pfaff, Elijah Perrine and John Marita, runners and jumpers Patrick Curran, Connor Hanson, Dominic Enea, Brad Novak and Drew Steger, jumpers Elijah Triggs and Peter Chapin and long-distance runner Henry Desmond, among other seniors, will lead their younger team members this season.
“We are confident in ourselves going into this meet,” Triggs said. “We’ve worked hard to prepare for it.” Triggs added that the team has been practicing extensively to train for their season, repeatedly performing activities such as weightlifting, running and jumping.
While three out of the five teams that the Highlanders will face are not in the North Shore Conference, and Germantown and Grafton placed below the Highlanders at last year’s conference meet, Triggs said their opponents are not the toughest rivals they will face in this year’s competition.
“I think our biggest rivals are ourselves,” he said. “No one can affect us if we don’t let them.”
But Triggs added that he’s eagerly anticipating the meet, believing the Highlanders’ hard work and training will yield a great result. “We’ve been working hard after school…and it’ll be nice to see how it pays off,” he said.
