Girls soccer gears up for more goals

Allie Haddad, junior, kicks the ball during last week’s match against Shorewood High School. The girls won their match and proceeded to win their next match against Port Washington.

After months of practice and hard work, the Homestead girls soccer team has finally found something they’ve been looking for both on and off the field, perhaps even for years: their rhythm.

The girls are proud to have gone 4-0-1 on their season so far, winning every game and match except for last weekend’s match against Neenah in the Kenosha Tremper tournament. The girls were missing starters on that weekend match but ultimately made a comeback, only to later lose on penalty kicks.

“[That was] the hardest game we have had,” junior Allie Haddad said.

But for that one tie, there have been four victories. One of the team’s two senior captains, Christine Kerkman, says she believes her team has been very successful so far this season and that they work very well together on and off the field.

“I think that our record shows how well our team works together to get the victory. We have been working hard since preseason has started, and it’s finally paying off,” Kerkman said.

Kerkman elaborated to say that while this 4-0-1 record isn’t necessarily unusual for this point in the soccer season, she feels her team’s bond is closer this year than any year in the past, and she thinks that closeness has allowed them to play better together than the other teams.

Haddad agreed. “This year is a lot different than other years because of the team chemistry and all the potential we have.”

“We are a lot more serious and have a lot more talent than other years,” Haddad said.

Kerkman spoke about her favorite moments of the season so far, and echoed her teammate’s statement. She said, “My favorite moment so far this year is playing Port Washington and winning 6-1. Off the field, my favorite moment of the season so far is all the team bonding we have been doing. We get along much better this year than we have in the past and hopefully that will help us advance in playoffs.”

According to Haddad, the team has been training hard in hopes of attaining that goal.

“Practices have been a lot more intense,” she said. “We have been working really hard, doing a lot of sprints and lifting to get faster and stronger.”

Come see the girls continue their winning season on April 22 at 7 p.m. at Homestead.
