Homestead football gets a victory against Milwaukee Lutheran

Homestead’s running backs line up during Friday night’s soggy game against Milwaukee Lutheran.

Coming off of a devastating loss to Germantown last week, the Highlanders were hungry for a victory, and on Friday, Sept. 19, Homestead took on Milwaukee Lutheran and came away with a 34-14 win.

The rain did not keep Homestead’s offense from the pass play. Eric Zoeller, junior, threw for three touchdowns, all to different receivers.

The first score of the game came from Zoeller on a 7-yard touchdown run. Soon after, Zoeller hit Tyler Woldt, senior, in the endzone for a 29-yard completion. The first quarter of the game ended 14-0, with the Highlanders with the lead.

Woldt’s younger brother, Bradley Woldt, sophomore, also got in on the action with a 16-yard touchdown catch from Zoeller in the second quarter. The extra point was missed, putting the score at 20-0 to end the first half.

Football has helped the Woldt brothers grow even closer, and in games like Friday’s, they both have reasons to be proud of each other.

“It’s a pretty special experience. Not many people have the opportunity to play with their brother. So when we have some success, it makes it that much better,” Tyler Woldt said.

“He is somebody that I looked up to while playing sports. When we both have good games and are able to help the team, it makes it extra special,” Bradley Woldt said.

After the Woldt brothers put on a show in the first half, the Highlanders came out strong in the second half, putting up another seven points as a result of Zoeller’s third touchdown pass to Jack Popp, senior. Soon after, Matt Wade, senior, took the ball into the endzone for 50 yards, making the score 34-0 by the end of the third quarter.

In the last minutes of the third quarter, the Highlanders defense displayed the talent of its secondary with two interceptions, one by Sean Driscoll, senior, and the second by Jake Bruner, senior.

With the Highlanders up by 34, Homestead was able to experiment with different players with only one quarter left to play until the final whistle blew. In that last quarter, the Red Knights scored twice. Milwaukee Lutheran’s Josiah Hedrington threw a 65-yard touchdown to put Milwaukee Lutheran on the board for the second time in the game.

Hedrington threw for 218 yards, but his promising showing under center was not enough to bring his team to victory.

After a failed onside kick attempt, the Highlanders took over for the final drive and ended the game with a series of knees.

Matt Winters, senior, led the team in yards with a total of 96 rushing yards. “It was a good game for us. Coming off of a loss, we were determined to make this game count. It was also a game for a lot of our players to get some experience in game time,” Winters said.

The Highlanders will take on the Port Washington Pirates next Friday for Homestead’s Homecoming Game and will take the experiences they gained from this past game to work hard for the win. “We wanted the bad taste of a loss out of our mouths, which really fired us up to get the win,” Tyler Woldt said.
