Winter sports at Homestead are nearing their end, and many of the teams are picking up the pace at the perfect time.

For many of the winter sports at Homestead, the season is nearing its end, and many of the teams are gaining momentum at just the right moment.

The wrestling team had a successful conference tournament this past weekend, with two wrestlers placing first in their weight classes: seniors Tyler Denmark in the 170 lb group and Doug Lennon in the 155 lb division.

“It’s a good feeling to be able to see my hard work pay off. Both Tyler and I have been working extremely hard this season to get to this point,” Lennon said. This coming weekend the varsity wrestlers will take on the regional tournament at Menomonee Falls High School.

Both the boys and girls ski team are set to compete in the state tournament this coming weekend in LaCrosse. The boys did not find out until last Friday, Feb. 5 that they had qualified for state. They had to patiently await the results of races that took place that Thursday.

The individuals who will be representing Homestead for the girls team are the following: Lizzy Tucker, Kimmie Mayer, Christianna Gess and Bridget Woody, seniors, Charlotte Doering and Anna Lauenstein, juniors, and Cate Heilmann, freshman. The boys that will be racing are Matt Heilmann and Mitch Lauenstein, seniors, Max Potter and Tim Allen, juniors, Sullivan Prellwitz, sophomore, and Alec Hering and Jake Raddatz, freshmen. The competition will be streamed live for those who cannot attend.

The girls basketball team currently has a record of 9-3, and they, along with the boys team, will be taking on the Nicolet Knights on Friday at Nicolet. The girls will play first and then the boys will go right after. This is a big game for the girls because Coach Wolf was previously the head coach for the girls team at Nicolet.

The boys basketball team has also been on a roll. After a slow start to the season, the team has won some crucial conference games. The biggest being against Cedarburg two weeks ago when the Highlanders handed the Bulldogs their first loss in conference play. Just last Friday, the team had another big win against Milwaukee Lutheran, a team they had lost to earlier in the season.

“We’re playing better. We’re moving up the ladder. We had a slow start, but we are coming together as a team. We are going in the right direction in the right time of the year,” Head Coach Kevin Mckenna said.

Boys hockey was crowned the conference champions in late January, and now the team is preparing for the WIAA playoffs that will begin next week. The team’s first matchup in the playoffs will be against Beaver Dam, but their focus is on their game tomorrow against Appleton, the number one team in the state, and their last regular season game against Waukesha.

“This season has been everything that I hoped my senior season would be. We have worked well has a team, and we keep improving with every week that passes. We are excited to go to work in the playoffs,” Jake Elchert, senior captain, said.

Another big weekend is in store for the boys swim and dive team. After placing third at the conference meet last weekend, the boys are preparing to take on sectionals. Zach Teplin, freshman, has been a stand out for the Highlanders and will be swimming in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 100 fly and the 200 free. Chris Eckhardt, junior, will also be swimming in many events including the 200 im, 100 back, 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

Girls gymnastics will also have a busy weekend, taking part in the Bradley Invite hosted by the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes. This invite will host some of the state’s best gymnasts, so it will be a way for the gymnastics team to be able to see what the competition is like outside of the conference. With conference quickly approaching at the end of February, the team is looking to perfect any little details in their routine.

“The Bradley is always a lot of fun, but it is also an important meet for us because some of the teams that are in attendance are in our sectional. This will be an opportunity to see what we’re up against in sectionals,” Ellie Trau, senior captain, said.
