The boys varsity swim team, or, as they are commonly referred to, the Jugmen, are undefeated in conference so far with a record of 6-0. The team also won the Rocket Invite in South Milwaukee which is another highlight of their season so far.
Ian Godden, senior, expands on the meet: “So far we were able to pull out a win at the Rocket Invite in South Milwaukee which was a new meet for the Jugmen, but we were able to secure the first place team finish and even set multiple meet records which was a great feeling all around for the Jugmen.”
Oliver Peters, senior, is most proud of the team’s record setting so far this season.
“Our biggest team accomplishment so far is setting multiple meet records at an invite. In this same meet I also won the 50 free and was in our winning 200 freestyle relay,” Peters said.
However, with success often comes adversity. The team has experienced some challenges, such as adjusting to the new coaching staff, in order to reach the success they have.
“This year we got new coaches, Coach Leo and Coach Adam, and it took a bit to get used to the new environment at first since we loved our old Coach Mark so much. I feel the boys really connected with Leo and Adam and we all grew very close to them not only as coaches but as people,” Godden said.
The Jugmen have a promising feeling about their chances at a state run.
“I’m most looking forward to our end-of-the-season meets, conference, sectionals, and state. The energy and feeling at those meets are unmatched, and I’m looking forward to potentially winning conference as a team and for me personally winning the 100 breast at conference,” Godden said.
Kyle O’Connor, junior, agrees with Godden in what he’s most excited for next.
“I’m most looking forward to sectionals and the state meet. We’re hoping to have five individual state qualifiers this year, which is really exciting,” O’Connor said.
Strong connections within the team allow them to push each other.
“I’ve learned that the more work you put in, the better your results will be. I’ve also learned how important it is to have teammates who push you. Miles Burke, Riley Burke, Ian Godden and Parker Hicks all put in a lot of work and bring a competitive edge to the team that makes everyone better,” O’Connor said.
Parker Hicks, freshman, also notes that the ability to focus is another necessary factor in performing well in major upcoming meets.
“One thing I have learned this season is that I need to make sure that I’m focused every day in practice because when it comes to meets, especially conferences and beyond, I need to be able to do the little things without even thinking about it,” Hicks, said.
