In 2025, Homestead sent at least 54 students to a Big 10 school. On top of that, in 2024, at least 74 attended a Big 10 university. The Big 10, the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States, has many large universities under this name.
At Homestead, many of the seniors every year choose a Big 10 school over many other choices for many different reasons. Some components that attract students are the large sizes of the schools, their amazing programs, and their excellent social scenes. Some Big 10 schools that Homestead students are often drawn to are the University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin-Madison, The Ohio State University, and more.
Kate Baden, senior, who is attending the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2026, was influenced by her sister to choose Minnesota.
“My sister got a really good group of friends and she really liked her professors since they helped her excel in what she was doing. She was able to do so many things outside of just normal college activities, like concerts,” Baden said.
In addition to the Big 10 schools offering fun social scenes, schools like the University can Iowa offer at-home vibes for some students who may be homesick and feel that a school such as Iowa feels like home.
Olivia Morgan, senior, who is attending the University of Iowa in the fall of 2026, had many reasons for choosing Iowa but feels like it will provide her with a sense of home.
“I liked that the college town is really close to the campus and there are many restaurants and stores, so it feels a bit like Mequon right across the campus,” Morgan said.
In addition, Big 10 schools also offer spectacular programs for students in many different fields. Whether a student is going to medical, business, or engineering school, or they are looking for programs like theatre, sports, or study abroad, the Big 10 schools have it.
Maggie Lundstrom, senior, was drawn to Michigan State University for their outstanding programs.
“I want to major in something business and their business school is very good. Also, they also are #1 in the nation for their travel abroad programs,” Lundstrom said.
