The Homestead boys golf team will travel to Washington County Golf Course this Thursday, May 21, to compete in the boys varsity conference meet. This meet contains some of the conference’s top competitors such as Cedarburg and Germantown.

For Head Coach Steve O’Brien, the squad has been able to live up to the legacy of last year’s state champion team and has worked hard as a team to get where they are now. “I believe our team morale is very good as we enter the final stage of our season. The guys all get along very well. They enjoy competing as a team and encouraging one another to improve,” O’Brien said.

The Highlanders currently have a lead on Whitefish Bay in conference and are only getting better. “We are definitely trending in the right direction. Joey [Hobbs], Max [Pascher] and Blake [Anderson] are coming along in their ability to grind when things aren’t going very well and also play in tournament rounds more consistently,” Robbie Morway, sophomore, said.

For the meet Thursday, the team is confident they will be victorious. “We feel just as confident now as we have this entire season that we can play to our best ability,” Blake Anderson, senior, said. “If we play our game, we can pull out a conference win,” added Joseph Hobbs, junior.

“Mentally, we have got to work on staying focused on each shot and not get too far ahead of ourselves. We must remain positive throughout the round and eliminate doubt and fear. We must commit to each shot. Physically, we must improve on our scoring shots around the green and our putting,” O’Brien said.

Late in the season, the boys are still taking advantage of finding ways to better their game. “We’ve spent the past couple weeks refining our short game and practicing everyday so we definitely think we will continue to improve,” Anderson said.

The final stretch of the season contains regionals, sectionals, and the ultimate challenge, state. The team will continue their road to state next with regionals at Hidden Glen Golf Course.

“I think we are peaking at the perfect time to get through sectionals to state,” Morway said.
