Homestead lines up at the start of the game vs. the Brookfield Catholic Memorial Stars. After the Star Spangled Banner was played the guys skated over to their positions. “I am very proud of our team this season. We are a close knit band of brothers that love to be around each other and can pick each other up whenever we need,” Jake Elchert, senior, said.

After a well-played game against Bayport that they lost 4-3 in overtime, the boys hockey team will take on the Middleton Cardinals for what is one of the biggest games for the Homestead boys, at the Ozaukee Ice center Saturday December 19th.

Losing seven seniors from last year, the team added some key new players to their roster to improve their season including talented freshman Gavin Henry. The team this year is lead by senior captains Sean Driscoll, Jake Elchert, and Joseph Verespej. They have all been contributing factors to the team for the past couple of years and are looking to make their senior year one to remember.

With three games in one week, the Highlanders will be very prepared to face the Cardinals. “It’s always tough to have a lot of games in a week but we’re very confident that we’ll be prepared for the game Saturday. Obviously, Middleton is a top team in the state but we’ve shown we can play with some of those teams such as Bay Port so I think we’re in for a good battle,” Driscoll said.

“We have a game on Friday to focus on first. We play at Grafton on Friday and need to take care of business there first. Middleton has been playing very well and is an excellent team. If the players work hard and are committed to playing the game the right way, we will be fine against Grafton and Middleton this weekend,” Coach Tony Navarre said.

On Tuesday of this week, the Homestead Highlanders faced the Brookfield East Spartans. The game ended in a close tie of 1-1 in overtime. “The team played decent against Brookfield. Both teams played well defensively but we missed some opportunities to score and finish the game,” Coach Navarre said.

Last year, they played against Middleton as their first game of the season, winning 3-2 and starting the season with a bang. “We are very eager to get on the ice and play against Middleton; it’s bound to be a great game,” Elchert said.
