A hoax call for a shooting on Range Line Road on Monday, Jan. 25 placed three Mequon schools on lockdown and closed Range Line Road while police investigated. The call turned out to be a prank, and the caller will be identified and charged by Mequon police.

Yesterday, a call to Mequon police was made right before noon, the young man stating that someone had been shot on Range Line Road. While the call turned out to be a hoax, Range Line Road was closed to traffic for 45 minutes and Range Line, Lake Shore, and Lumen Christi schools were placed on lockdown until 12:35 p.m., according to Fox6Now.

Police talked with several neighbors but were unable to find any evidence of a shooting or victim in the area.

Mequon Police Chief Steve Graff said in a statement on Monday, “We take these types of calls very seriously. While the person who made the call may find it amusing, this is a dangerous situation that puts many people at risk, including the responding officers and the community at large.”

Chief Graff also stated the police will investigate the case until they find the caller, and the appropriate charges will be filed against him.

The incident follows another similar situation that occurred Thursday afternoon when a student made a threat against Homestead via the app “Whatsgoodly,” leading to the closing of school on Friday. The suspect has been detained and a statement of his charges was read by Chief Graff during a news conference.
