The girls volleyball team gathers together to size up the competition.

The girls varsity volleyball team geared up for a tough game last night, Tuesday, Sept.19, against a main conference rival: Whitefish Bay. Heidi Hoffman, senior captain of the team commented before the game, “This is one of our common conference rivals, and we are hoping to win right now because they have some pretty good freshmen coming up and we are excited to see what they have.

To begin, after the first match, the Highlander’s won 25-15. Confirming their win, Chelsea Rowe, senior captain, had several major serves, assisted by Sam Schindler, senior. The successful serves pushed Homestead to the lead.

Moving into the second match, Bay picked up a second win and stayed close behind the Highlanders for the majority of the match. Towards the end, the Blue Dukes had served several points that the Highlanders were unable to return, resulting in Whitefish Bay’s win 25-21.

Bay came into the third match strongly, completely attacking the Highlanders 8-0 during the beginning minutes. Despite this, the Highlanders pushed to catch up with the Blue Dukes. Several hard hits by Emma Syzpszak, junior, helped them to clinch the win 25-20.

Out for the win, the Highlanders brought their game mantra, “high energy” to the fourth match. The end was extremely tense, with a tied score of 24-24. Homestead only needed to win one more match for the victory. Sam Schindler delivered the winning serve, finalizing the game 26-24 to Homestead.

Rowe was smiling and out of breath after the match. “It was definitely a little close but we definitely pulled together and played as a team again. I mean you could tell, we were down by 9. We came back and we won both games, coming together and playing as a team, we are able to come back together and win,” she said of the win.

Looking ahead to the future, one of the varsity players analyze the team’s strategy: “We definitely talked a lot more in the third and the fourth games which was ultimately why we won.  We need to fix our communication through parts of our game play and our overall energy. We need to be more excited after points,” Kaitlyn Bliesner, junior, said.
