Back in action: Homestead kicks off the new year

After a long, well-deserved break for athletics, Homestead looks to get back into the swing of things as regular conference games start back up this week.

The boys hockey team came off to a strong start in their Admirals Cup as the team beat Arrowhead 7-2, however Homestead’s run was stymied as it fell prey to DePere, 4-3 and New Trier (Illinois), 3-0.  Homestead, however, bounced back as it beat Grafton 8-2 and Germantown 4-1 in its conference tournament.  The boys of winter drill through this week with games against Cedarburg on Tuesday and WNS on Friday.

A tale of two halves sums up Homestead’s loss to Muskego in the championship game of the John Chekouras Classic on Dec. 27. Homestead went up by as much as 12 points in the first half and finished the first half with a 29-21 lead; however, Muskego gradually chipped away and won 71-55.  This is Homestead’s second loss this year, both coming to Muskego.  Homestead looks to take flight this week against Milwaukee Lutheran on Tuesday and against perennial conference champ, Germantown.

The Lakeshore Lightning took home the crown in its Hodag Holiday Tournament in Rhinelander.  Winning two out of the three games, Lakeshore avenged its first round loss and beat Arrowhead in the final round 5-3. Erin Connolly, junior goalie, leads the state with a .957 save percentage.

Lakeshore Lightning looks to go into the belly of the beast as it takes on the Brookfield co-op at Brookfield on Tuesday, and then it follows that match-up with a Saturday evening game against Beloit Memorial in the Janesville Ice Skating Center.

Coming off possibly the quietest break in all of Homestead, girls basketball faced off against no one over the lengthy winter break. Playing at home against Milwaukee Lutheran on Tuesday and at Germantown on Friday, it looks to pick up where it finished off before the break and coming out of this weekend victorious against its conference foes.

Another squadron coming off a nice break, wrestling looks to get back into the flow of things after a hiatus of matches.  Grappling against Cedarburg, home, on Thursday, the team eyes to rise up to the occasion and defeat its rivals down the road.

Meanwhile, the boys swim team came in sixth place at their invitational meet last Saturday out of 12 teams. The team dives into its competition this week, swimming against Cedarburg on Thursday, also at home, just like the boys wrestling team.  Homestead looks to be bustling on Thursday, as two Highlander teams take on two close-to-home rivals.

Looking to leap back onto the unbalanced bars, the gymnastic team preps for its second meet of the season against Nicolet and West Allis Combined on Wednesday in the Auxiliary Gym. Gymnastics won a nail biter in its first meet as it beat a Grafton and Cedarburg team 129.2 to 128.6.

If you are in the area anytime this week, be sure to stop by Homestead as there are a flurry of home games this week.
