The girls are huddling together before they face off against Cedarburg and Grafton. Homestead won this meet by one point. “It was so great to start off with a win, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for the rest of the season,” Rachel Laabs, senior, said.

The Homestead girls varsity gymnastics team took on Shorewood High School on Wednesday and came out victorious with a total score of 133.325.

“The team did really well. A lot of girls have stepped up into varsity positions because of various injuries on the team and have performed past everyone’s expectations,” Tori Puhl, senior captain, said.

Gaby Geiger, junior, agrees. “Yesterday’s meet was our best meet so far this season. We got our highest team score of the season and a lot of girls stepped up and took on new skills,” Geiger said.

John Glass, head coach, also agrees with both Puhl and Geiger and is looking forward to the rest of the season. “The girls on our team are cleaning up their skills and putting in new skills. I’m happy we are getting better and look forward to see where this teams ends up at the end of the season,” Glass said.

Puhl also came out very strong in her individual routines placing first in floor with the scores of a 9.175 and a 9.0 and finishing second on the beam with a 8.9. The highest score one can get is 10. “I think I had a pretty good meet too. I have been practicing really hard and have been doing a lot of routines in practice and it payed off last night,” Puhl said.

Lilly Raimann, freshman, does the splits as a part of her floor routine. She finished her routine with a flip through the air. “We all worked really hard to get this win,” Raimann said.

Senior Dominique Wilkerson also came out competing very well in her routines scoring a 8.625 on floor, a 8.0 on beam, and a 7.7 on vault.

Along with it being a tremendous victory for the girls, it was also Senior night where the team paid tribute to Puhl, Wilkerson, Nia Feaster, and Rachel Labbs.

“Senior night went very smoothly thanks to all the younger girls. It was a bittersweet moment for all of us,” Puhl said. “Senior night was honestly one of my favorite meets. It was sad but it was nice to hear how my team felt about me and how I impacted their season,” Wilkerson said. Geiger also stated that “It was so special and sad to recognize our seniors because they are such an important part to our team. We will miss them so much next year and we can only hope that we all made them proud on their night.”

The girls look to keep the momentum going and come on strong as the team faces off against Brookfield Central next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Homestead.
