Sending six wrestlers to the sectional tournament in Menomonee Falls this Saturday, the Homestead grapplers are looking to rev up the intensity and propel onwards to state.  Joey Fischer, Connor Scholtus, Mark Usatinsky, Larry Martin, seniors and Tyler Denmark, junior will be competing for a ticket to state this Saturday.

Closing out its regular season, Homestead placed fourth in conference with seven wrestlers finishing in the top three. Zupke has been a standout star for Homestead, and he currently sits with an undefeated record on his way to regionals.

Drew Waller, senior, unfortunately was unable to make the postseason tournament as he was knocked out with a concussion and was ineligible to wrestle in the regional tournament last week.  Martin, who recently advanced to sectionals, now has surrendered his spot due to a shoulder/arm injury suffered at regionals. Homestead may be down two strong wrestlers, but its spirits are still high as state is in sight.

Homestead recently finished its regional, where six wrestlers finished in the top four in their respective weight classes, but now it faces the tough task of needing to place in the top two of its respective weight classes in order to march into Madison.

“It was really important for us to do well in regionals because we all worked really hard this season and to be able to advance is a really big deal for us wrestlers and to just be one step closer is an awesome feeling,” Martin said.

Not a stranger to the state tournament, Zupke leads the way for this squadron, having the most experience on the team, however the other five newcomers look to make a splash and stamp their own legacies on Homestead’s wrestling traditions.

“Anyone can beat anyone in wrestling. Just look at Larry Martin, he came in with a chip on his shoulder and wound up with his first ever medal and now has qualified for sectionals, it goes to show anything can happen with a great mindset,” Zupke said.

With one last road block in the way to advance to state, Menomonee Falls will be the place to be as wrestlers look to make their goals a reality and leave it all on the mats.
