The Homestead girls varsity golf team captured second place at the regional competition on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in Watertown.

The Homestead girls golf team made another stop on their road to state on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the regional competition in Watertown. The team placed second overall, losing to Arrowhead by only one point.

Under the lead of Head Coach John Krueger, the team has already won the North Shore conference title and only plan on improving from there. Along with placing well at regionals, the team scored its best overall score of the season with a 331, and Speedy Kent, sophomore, got medal honors with her score of 73 that won her the meet individually. Kent shot in five birdies and was a few swings under second place finisher Claire Lauterbach of Arrowhead.

Kent missed the first couple of weeks of practice due to a wrist injury she obtained over the summer, but that has not affected her game thus far in the season. Kent has the ability to win the Division 1 title, and her finish at the regional meet puts her one step closer to reaching that goal.

“Our varsity chemistry is as good as ever, which contributes to our good play as of lately,” Kent said.

According to Bella Barbiere, senior who shot a 90 at regionals, the second place finish is credited to an all-around team effort that everyone had a positive impact on. She and the team know that there are always areas they can improve on, and plan to work on those things in practice before regionals. “My personal goal is to realize that every stroke counts and to stay focused on each shot,” Barbiere said.

The sectional competition will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Fond du Lac, Wis., and the Highlanders plan to make the best of the meet and hope to qualify as a team and send some players to the state tournament.

“We have a lot of momentum going into sectionals. Our goal is to qualify for the state tournament as a team. I believe that we have a chance to do so if we play like we did yesterday. It would be amazing if we do qualify because, a couple of months ago, nobody gave us a chance,” Kent said.
