Captain Allie Beckers, senior, prepares to serve in a game against the Cedarburg Bulldogs

The girls volleyball team has advanced past regionals after beating Menomonee Falls 3-1, and is set to play Oconomowoc at Homestead on Thursday, Oct. 29 for the sectional title.

“I admire all of my teammates’ effort and passion in the game against Menomonee Falls. That game was crucial to move on,” Allie Beckers, senior, said. “Even when we lost the first game, we did not let it discourage us, and we ended up winning the next three.”

The team has had one of its best seasons so far, beating rival teams such as Germantown and Nicolet, but fell short of the conference title, losing to Cedarburg. Winning regionals was a big goal for the team all season.

“Winning regionals felt incredible; we haven’t made it past the second round of regionals over the past couple of years, which made this win even more special,” Alexis Silver, senior outside hitter, said.

As the number 6 seed, Homestead came into the playoff bracket as the underdog. Menomonee Falls was the third seed and expected to have an easy win against the Highlanders. “Coming in as the sixth seed, many people didn’t think we would win, but we fought hard for every point and believed in ourselves, ultimately pulling out a win,” Silver said.

The team’s chemistry on the court is due to not only the amount of talent the team has, but also the family-like feel of the team. “It’s a really great environment and we’re all super supportive of each other at all times,” Mackenzie Looft, senior, said.

Oconomowoc is a team that Homestead rarely faces, so they do not know exactly what to expect from the game; all the team knows is that the girls plan on fighting for every point and coming out with the win.

“We do not expect this match to be easy by any means. We always take games one point at a time and play each point like it’s the state championship,” Beckers said.
